Welcome to Dodge City! The Town of
Dodge City is the youngest municipality in Cullman County, incorporated
relatively recently in 1992. Located at the intersection of Highway 69
South and Interstate 65, Dodge City sits near the City of
Hanceville immediately to the south of Cullman. Dodge City's quick
access to the interstate and the availability of some 300 acres of land
ripe for development makes it an excellent choice for the location of a
business or industry. Dodge City has a population of approximately 612
citizens, according to the last U.S. Census, which by no means qualifies
the town as a major metropolitan area. Mayor Perry Ray is quite proud of
Dodge City's small-town status, however, and is quick to note that
careful attention to population and industrial growth has spared the
municipality the growing pains that often afflict such areas of
opportunity.
"We think we've done quite well to have only been a town for
almost 12 years," Ray said. "Some towns have been in existence
for more than 100 years and don't have the things we've got in Dodge
City."
The "pride and joy" of the town, according to Ray, is the
new town hall, which was completed in 1998. The town hall has a large
conference room for council meetings, administrative offices and a
basement community/senior center that is used by local organizations and
is also rented out for private and family gatherings. The 60ft.x 50ft.
community center features a large kitchen and doubles as a storm shelter
in the event of inclement weather.
Directly behind the town hall is a large parcel of land that Ray and
the town council hope will one day be developed for use as a
baseball/softball field and fitness trail. Ray admits, however, that the
town's ongoing sewer project takes precedence over any other projects
for the time being.
The $3.8 million sewer system installation project in Dodge City has
been in the works for some time, but actual groundwork began in late
2002 following the appropriation of necessary funding. Mayor Ray said
the project is scheduled for completion in July 2003 and will be a great
asset to existing businesses as well as a useful tool in attracting new
industries to Dodge City.
"We've got quite a few places coming in," said
Ray of new businesses planning to locate in the town. "And we're
really proud of all the businesses we do have. They're all assets to the
community." One of the newest developments in Dodge
City is the addition of a satellite office of the Cullman County Revenue
Commissioner. The office affords Dodge City residents - and other
residents living in the southern portion of Cullman County - the
opportunity to purchase tags, pay taxes and transact other business
locally. A similar satellite office was also opened in the Town of
Baileyton to serve citizens in the northern portion of the county. "We've
had nothing but positive feedback on the satellite office," said Ray.
"It's doing a great business. Many people still go to the courthouse
if they have business in Cullman, but it's great to have the option to
handle it locally." "We're a small and simple
town," Ray said. "But we like it."
