Welcome
to Holly Pond! According to
local author Margaret Jean Jones' 1972 book Combing Cullman County, the
community of Holly Pond was named for its "luxuriant holly bushes and
virgin woodlands" and "distinctive pond." Although the pond
no longer exists, the town itself has grown considerably since its founding
in 1875
and was ranked the 59th fastest growing municipality in the state in the
year 2000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Incorporated
in 1912, the town is located east of Cullman on Highway 278. According
to Mayor Paul Barnett, the bustling community
currently has 645 residents and has grown "by leaps and bounds" since
the addition of sewer services in 1985 and the opening of VF Corp.'s Lee
Jeans
Distribution Center, the town's largest single employer.
"Holly
Pond is a great place to live and work," said
Barnett. "We
have quite a few successful industries here, and there's plenty of
land
available for businesses who would like to locate here."
In
addition to plans for future industrial development, Barnett said
the town is also constantly striving to improve its many parks for
the benefit of its citizens. One such project currently in its early
stages is the addition of a paved walking trail at Holly Pond Park.
The park currently contains a tennis courts, baseball fields, batting
cages, a playground, pavilions and picnic areas and a rustic stage
for musical performances.
Other
renovations and additions to the park within the past year include
a new pavilion and expanded parking for the baseball field, said
Town Clerk Linda Pope, who also noted that the town has recently
constructed Dane Estes Memorial Park, which honors longtime mayor
and local industrial developer Dane Estes.
Also in the works is the construction of a new fire station, which
will be much larger and more modern in its construction, Pope said. Work
is also being done at Holly Pond School where additional classrooms are
being built.
"We're definitely growing," Barnett
said. "There's
no doubt about that. But, as Holly Pond grows, we've got to keep
in mind that our obligation
as town officials is first and foremost to serve its citizens and give
them the best quality of life we can. The people of Holly Pond are
our
greatest asset."
