Welcome to the Town of West Point! Located on
Interstate 65 at the county's northernmost border, West Point was
incorporated in 1976 and currently has a population of approximately 350
citizens.
As one might guess from the impressive record of the
school's math teams, who were state champions from 1981 to 1983 and again
from 1998 until 2000, academics are very important in the town as are the
school's athletic programs. "Our community mostly
revolves around the school system," said Town Clerk Joyce Sapp. "The
Elementary, Middle and High Schools at West Point combined make up the
largest school in the county." "We are very, very proud
of our school," said West Point Mayor Kenneth Kilgo. "Our students have
proven themselves many times over to be among the best in the state, both
in the areas of academics and athletics." The town
itself has numerous businesses and industries, said Kilgo. West
Point, he noted, is blessed with a "prime location," being situated
directly on Alabama Highway 157 and only a few miles away from Interstate 65.
"Our location is highly beneficial to the businesses that operate here and
will hopefully be a deciding factor in future industries choosing West
Point as their home," Kilgo said. "We have plenty of acreage
available for industrial development, and we also have several existing
buildings that would be well suited to smaller businesses or retailers."
Kilgo said that the town will soon be home to a new store as the
retail outlet Dollar General plans to build in West Point in the coming
months. Plans are also in the works to construct a walking trail and to
add another baseball field to the town's park complex.
"Our citizens are very active in the community," Kilgo said. "Senior
citizens meet at the town hall regularly, we have summer athletic programs
that will soon be starting up and a summer library program as well."
One of the town's newest additions are the gigantic chimes located in
front of the town hall. A tribute and memorial to those who died in the
Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York, the chimes
were constructed by local artist Steve Kubler, who donated them to the
town. According to town officials, Kubler is in the process of trying to
verify that they are in fact, as some suspect, the largest wind
chimes in the world. For more information on
